A beautiful mane is the secret of a beautiful face. Not only do the flowing tresses look lovely, they reflect your health as well. Hair is made of a protein called Keratin and they grow out of follicles that attach the hair to the skin. The follicles are nestled in a bulb which feeds the hair with the nutrients required.

Though it differs from person to person, a hair strand grows by an average of about 1-1.5 centimetres in a month. A number of treatments are available for normal as well as damaged hair. However, there are simple natural methods that you can use to maintain and repair your hair.

Deep Steam Conditioning

Deep Steam Conditioning

The beauty and hair care saloons have these sophisticated machines for providing steam treatment. Similar effect of steam can be created at home. Oil your hair thoroughly especially on the scalp. Heat water to the degree where it begins to throw steam, then immerse a thin towel in it and with the help of a large tong squeeze the water out of the towel.

Let the initial steam escape so that the towel is not too hot for you. Wrap the towel around your hair. Do this for 15 minutes and then wash as usual. You can also use a humidifier to steam your scalp directly by placing your head in the direction of steam. Limit the exposure to 10 minutes.

Egg

Egg

Egg is a natural conditioner. It has fats that help moisturising the hair and the proteins are nutrients that makes up the hair. Take an egg yolk and blend it with a spoon. Apply the egg on your scalp and along the length of the hair. Let it rest for at least half an hour.

Wash with your regular shampoo and apply conditioner. You can repeat this process as many times as required. If your hair is already very oily then add a few drops of lemon with the egg. You can also change your shampoo to suit the requirement of “intensely oily” hair.

Oil

Oil Massage

Hair loves oil. Massaging the scalp regularly, a few hours before hair wash can make your hair healthily moisturised and easy to manage. Also, oil can provide relief from Dandruff, and itchy and flaky scalp.

Olive oil, mustard oil and coconut oil are recommended over other oils for the hair. They have anti-oxidant properties and are antibacterial. Coconut oil has lauric acid which is beneficial for the hair growth. Mustard oil is a wonder treatment for dry and frizzy hair.

Lemon

Lemon

Lemon is a great cleanser. Not only this, but it can also relieve you of dandruff and itchy scalp. The best method to use lemon on your hair or scalp is to mix some oil in it. This is because lemon can cause dryness and can have a bleaching effect on your tresses as well.

Mix equal parts lemon with a moisturising oil like mustard or coconut. Apply this solution to your scalp for an effective and immediate relief from oily  and dandruff ridden scalp.

Baking Soda

Baking Soda

Baking soda, like lemon is also a great cleansing agent. Over a period of time due to usage of various hair products and exposure to dust and pollution, the scalp can be left with their remnants. These can stunt the hair growth seriously.

A regular cleaning of the scalp with baking soda can help you get rid of these build ups. Add a spoonful of baking soda in half a bowl of water until it foams. Massage it on your scalp and wash after 15 minutes.
