Split ends in hair is a common hair problem that many women face. In this condition, a single strand of hair splits into two or more parts at its end. Any type of hair, whether dry, oily or normal of any length either can get affected by split ends.
Split ends are formed easily at the end of weak and fragile hair strands. Each strand of our hair is composed of three layers called medulla, cortex and cuticle. The outermost layer cuticle protects the inner layers which are made of keratin (the same protein we have in our finger nails).
Cuticle gets damaged due to over exposure to the sun, poor diet, dryness, frequent use of harsh hair products like hair gel, hair colors which contain harsh chemicals, styling appliance like hair dryer that involve heat. As a result, the middle layer cortex gets exposed due to wearing away of the coils of keratin and results in split ends.
Natural Ways To Prevent Split Ends
Maintain Proper Hair Care Routine
Maintaining a proper hair care routine can prevent split ends. Wrong hair care methods that most women use as a daily routine can cause lot of damage to their hair.
For example, for shampooing their hair, many women pile up their hair on the top and scrub them vigorously. This is not the correct way of shampooing. Just massage shampoo softly into the scalp and rinse. Rest of the hair will automatically get cleaned when you rinse your hair thoroughly.
Do not comb wet hair. Brush and comb can tear the wet hair. When the hair gets semi dry, use a wide-toothed comb to remove tangles. While sleeping, use a satin pillow cover to avoid breakage of split end prone hair.
Protect From Heat
Protect the hair from heat. Keeping the hair in its natural form is the best way to avoid split ends. Excessive styling like perming, straightening or curling which needs blow drying and heating the hair will make it brittle, dry and more susceptible to split ends. While styling your hair, occasionally use heat protection spray as a defense against heat.
Retain Hair’s Natural Moisture
Experts say that there is no need to shampoo your hair every day. It can strip away the natural oils from your scalp and make your hair dry and dull.
Washing your hair twice or thrice a week with a good quality shampoo can prevent split ends. Regular deep conditioning can also help to retain the moisture and avoid split ends.
Protect From Chemicals
Chemicals used in hair dye and styling gel damage the hair cuticles and makes your hair vulnerable to split ends. After swimming in a chlorinated pool, take a hot bath to remove all the residue from your hair.
After exercising, shampooing your hair is necessary because sweat and chemicals can damage your hair.
Protect From UV Rays Of The Sun
Protect your hair from UV rays of the sun. Use a wide-brimmed hat or scarf while spending time in the sun.
Natural Treatments For Split Ends
Split ends should be trimmed immediately the moment you notice them. Otherwise they will cause more damage to your hair. For getting rid of split ends and maintaining healthy hair, most stylists recommend trimming of hair every six weeks.
To make sure the spit end does not reappear quickly, cut at least quarter inch of your hair from the end. There is no need to make frequent trips to the salon; you can do it at home using a sharp scissor or split end trimmer.
To keep your hair free from the problem of split ends and nourish your hair, head massage is a very effective remedy. There are plenty of recipes which you can use for head massage.
This can stimulate the blood circulation on the scalp and strengthen the hair from its root as well as repair the hair ends by moisturizing them, making your hair healthy. Healthy hair hardly ever gets split ends.
Some of the healthy oils for head massage include coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil and almond oil. You can massage your hair by combining these oils or use them separately. For massaging, heat the oil and using your fingertips to massage the oil gently on your scalp.
After massaging, wrap a moist hot towel around the head and leave it for 20 minutes and then wash your hair using a mild shampoo. Hot oil treatment once or twice a week can prevent split ends completely. Avocado oil, which is very effective for preventing split ends, can also be used.
