Implantation bleeding is one of the foremost signs of pregnancy, which occurs when the fertilized ovum moves from fallopian tubes to uterus and gets glued to the inner lining of the uterus, referred as endometrial lining. During this entanglement, blastocyst (ball of zygote covered with a protective sheath) gets connected to the mother’s blood vessels, to receive nutrients and oxygen for growth.
During implantation, the blastocyst may cause a little amount of bleeding in process of getting attached to the uterus that gets expelled out from vagina and is called as implantation bleeding.
Every pregnant woman may not experience implantation bleeding as it is not essential that bleeding is caused during implantation of blastocyst into the endometrial wall. Only one third of women are known to experience this bleeding. Therefore, absence of implantation bleeding should never be considered as absence of pregnancy.
Symptoms Of Implantation Bleeding
Bleeding Before The Expected Date Of Menses
Implantation bleeding happens after 6 to 12 days of ovulation, which is roughly a few days ahead of next menstrual cycle.
Those women, who have regular periods, can easily make it out, when bleeding occurs before the regular cycling schedule. But, those whose menstruation cycle keep fluctuating, it is difficult to analyze by its timing.
Mild Vaginal Bleeding
Many women may experience very scanty vaginal bleeding or just a spotting at time of implantation bleeding. But in a few others, bleeding could be a little heavier. Though, mild bleeding is a clear sign for those women, who otherwise observed a regular heavy menstrual flow.
Usually no symptoms appear for implantation bleeding, but some women may experience little cramps in the uterus during implantation bleeding too. There is also observable increase in basal body temperature. The other pregnancy symptoms like frequent urination, swollen breasts, fatigue, increased sensitivity to odor and flatulence starts developing after implantation bleeding has occurred.
Hence, these symptoms when appear soon after bleeding confirms it was an implantation bleeding and the women is heading towards pregnancy. Though, pregnancy confirmation is only assured with urine and blood test as well as an ultrasound, performed by the specialist.
In case, pain is associated with an implantation bleeding, it is important to consult the gynecologist as it might be the sign of an ectopic pregnancy, a complicated situation where instead of uterus, the blastocyst gets implanted in other tissues. It mostly occurs in fallopian tubes and may be at times in ovaries, cervix and abdomen.
Pink Or Brown Blood
Implantation bleeding is either lighter or darker in color as compared to blood during menses. It may appear as faintest pink that may be observed on a toilet paper or brown colored as blood gets old while struggling to come out from the uterus lining due to implantation process. Some women may even show black colored discharge. This bleeding is mostly for shorter period than the menstrual bleeding.
Absence Of Clots
Menstruation bleeding can also show clots in the bleeding, but these remain absent from implantation bleeding, simply as it is a minor form of bleeding that happen for a short duration, and is not shedding of thick uterus lining as during menses.
