Headaches are a very common occurrence and most of us have experienced them at some point of time. We sense a headache mainly due to pain in the head, neck or shoulder region. A headache may be caused due to a variety of reasons and hence, the treatment depends on its source.
Most of us generally pop in a painkiller to get rid of this ruthless pain. However, it is always advisable to look for natural remedies for frequent occurrences. Therefore, we give you a list of natural cures for a headache to relieve you of this agonizing annoyance.
Natural Ways To Cure Headache
Out of the various origins of a headache, dehydration is one. Shortage of water in the body can affect oxygen supply and as a result, a glass of cold water is the best remedy at such times.
To stay hydrated throughout the day and avoid further likelihood of headaches, it is wise to have sufficient amount of water before going to bed at night.
Ice Or Ice Cold Water
You can crush ice, put it in a wash cloth and place this pack on your head or at the back of your neck. This will reduce the heat in the body which causes a headache. Otherwise, you can soak a soft napkin in ice cold water and place it on your forehead for respite from your pain. When warm, dip the napkin repeatedly in the water a few times and you will feel the difference.
A massage can alleviate a headache as it improves blood circulation and relaxes your body, in case of stress or tensions. Ask someone to give you an oil massage on the scalp by pouring coconut oil on their palms, applying it on your scalp and squeezing it.
Another option is to ask someone to press both sides of your head with their palms at the same time by applying lot of pressure as well as rubbing your temples. Alternatively, you can also have somebody massage your neck and back. Depending upon your area of pain you can choose one of the said methods.
A headache can sometimes arise from a cause as plain as hunger. If you have not eaten for a long time or have run to work without having breakfast, a headache can occur due to this deficiency of food. A simple way out of this problem is an intake of salt by way of having a quick snack or a fruit like an apple with some salt.
The contact point between the index finger and thumb is an acupressure point which, when massaged and pressed firmly, will give you great relief from your headache. If someone else does this for you, both hands can be done simultaneously and you can obtain relief quicker.
However, you should be careful while pressing the point as massaging a wrong point can cause you further pain in your hands.
Making tea with herbs and drinking it two to three times a day will help mitigate your headache gradually. The herbs you can use for the tea include a mixture of rosemary and sage, basil, ginger or cinnamon. A cup of herbal tea made with any of these herbs will do you a world of good and reduce or remove your headache completely. Alternatively, you can also chew fresh basil leaves in case of a mild headache.
At times, headaches crop up due to lack of sleep and thus, resting is an excellent solution. A headache from this source can be eradicated with as short as a 20-minute nap or a one hour sleep.
You can quicken this process by taking rest in a dark room by switching off the lights or drawing the curtains. Absence of light in the room will help you create a cool atmosphere and de-stress.
